It wasn’t long before the Capri needed some major work – a lot sooner than I had expected!
I was driving home from work one lunch time, when the passenger side front wheel fell off
and went rolling down the road. Lucky I wasn’t going very fast at the time.
|
The wheel hit
the wing, and tore it away from the A-post. Annoying this had been replaced in the past,
and was fairly rust free! However there wasn’t any other damage to any other surrounding
panels. Only the front valance was slightly pushed back:
I did think about buying a mig
and trying to fit a replacement wing myself, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to get the
same kind of finish that a bodyshop could do, especially as I’ve heard some nightmare
stories about the fit of pattern panels. Ford panels are impossible to get hold of, and
when they do, they go for stupid money, so a pattern one it was going to be. At the time
I had this done they were around £95.
I was recommended to a place just
down the road from me from a member of
oldskoolford who'd had work done there in the past.
Finishline UK Ltd agreeded to do the work, and fix a few other rust patches while the wing
was off. I was right in my assumptions about how well the wing would fit – at first the
panel gaps were huge, and an awful lot of fettling was needed to get it to fit.

You can see where the pattern wing
had to be cut and re-welded to get the fit against the scuttle and bonnet to line up.
I was very impressed with the end result, so I
know where I will be taking it back when I need the arches sorting out.
